Webster Art Gallery - Calgary Art Gallery
Born: June 30, 1961 in Calgary, Alberta
Graduated: University of Calgary, BFA, in 1985

David J. Veres David received his education from the University of Calgary, completing a BFA in 1985. After University he began experimenting with acrylic paint, learning to employ its unique flexibility and properties. This also represents his initial involvement with abstract art and by experimenting with this unique genre of painting, it allowed him to apply paint in a wide variety of methods and techniques. David pursued this method of modern painting for the next ten years. He then made a transition from "acrylic abstract" to a focus on landscape painting where he once again pushed the edge of the envelope by employing metallic paint to distinguish his painting from other landscape artists. This work featured the use of texture and surface to complement and enhance the underlying subject of the landscape. A desire to become a better landscape painter led him into a new journey of painting outside or "en plein air".

Commentary by David J. Veres
My departure from the methodologies I was incorporating into my work in the nineties and earlier part of this decade was the result of my new passion for "en plein air" painting. It was as if I had to relearn how to paint. My focus is now to venture into the very subject mater of my painting and by being there, capture the beauty and splendour provided by that which lies right in front of me. Because I have always loved hiking and camping, combining this with painting was a natural fit. With the experience I have gained in my five years of travelling across the county and capturing the beauty of my surroundings on canvas, I am now feeling more and more comfortable with my growth and maturity as a landscape artist. However, it is now time to move out of that comfort zone. You will see from future works that I have combined my understanding and experimentation with abstraction to my new work and am once again progressing into a new and dynamic era. I have always felt the creative process should encompass the same spontaneity as the act of painting on the surface itself, to do this an artist must be willing to embrace change. I believe this will prove to be an exciting new journey as I apply my past learnings and experiences to my current work in the landscape genre.

"As artists, it is our instinct to reflect on nature, and to interpret, capture, and create all that influences us."
