Joy was born and raised in Virden, Manitoba. She and her husband made a brief start in Brandon, MB. before choosing to make Calgary their home. They remained in Calgary from 1967 until 1973, when they, along with their three children moved to Brentwood Bay, BC. Joy and her husband Richard returned to Calgary to make their home in 1995.

Joy has been making and casting paper for several years. Deciding she wanted to have a dog and a cat, she experimented with various art forms before turning to papier-mâché to create them.

A self taught artist, she learned whatever techniques she needed to learn, to come up with the final result. Basic carpentry, anatomy (human and animal), modeling clay, bas-relief (carving in clay), painting with acrylics, paper making, casting, and molding of paper are all techniques that she studied to be able to create her animals. Basic courses in paper making techniques, clay manipulation, and painting, got her started and on her way to creating the animals you will find in her portfolio today.

Joy strives to create a likeness of human and animal form and yet bring out a whimsical quality and exaggerate that quality.
