Karen Pedlar was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She has a degree in painting from the Alberta College of Art and Design, as well as a diploma in journalism from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
From an Early age Karen was influenced by art and artists, such as her uncle Harry Savage, former instructor with the U of A Extension Department, and her brother-in-law Robert Milnthorp, former dean at ACAD. Other influences include her father Art, a retired pharmacist who dabbles in whimsical folk art sculpture, and her mother Joan, who creates intricate country quilts.
Karen has supported herself as an artist with jobs such as tree planting, grass mower, fishing lodge operator, grounds keeper, movie extra, freelance writer and as an intern photographer with The Calgary Herald in the late 1980's.
In 1990 Karen was hired by Canada Post and was living and working as a letter carrier in Calgary's inner city until 1998 when she gave up the security of a regular pay cheque to pursue her career as an artist full time.
Karen and her boyfriend moved to rural Alberta, adopted the slogan "less is more", and are now living a simple life, she as an artist and he as a carpenter.
Karen works in a variety of mediums including oils, watercolour, sculpture and photography. Her work is in several private collections as well as the Alberta Foundation for the Arts public collection.
ARTIST STATEMENT
All the money in the world can't buy a person any more time, and time is what I cherish most. The artwork I produce from having that time is the icing on my proverbial cake.
