John McKinnon John McKinnon works in a variety of mediums, both two and three-dimensional. To John it is an extension of the idea of working with a variety of tools, where each tool has a specific function. He finds it expedient to utilize whatever media works the best to express his creative intent. Sculpture, however, tends to predominate his work. On a day to day basis, spontaneity of following ideas and working with them through the various other media inevitably leads to new development on John's sculpture.

To John, art is self-expression, communication, reaching out into one's environment, perhaps an interpretation of one's environment from a perspective of nature or from a social or political perspective.

Sometimes making that connection between the tangible world we exist in physically and the metaphysical world in which we also exist and express through the use of archetypal images and symbols.

Ultimately though, John believes art is merely documentation of ones existence, a day by day diary, the by-product of one's experiences and growth. Each discovery or new insight weaves its way into the fabric of progression.

John's art has many aspects and levels of perception. It is something that is precise and declined and at the same time, demands an absolute freedom. It is for John the great metaphor of life; "Line creates life and form creating feeling." Without these two aspects functioning in harmony, there is no dynamics in the art, without harmony there is no life.

John McKinnon was born and resides in Nelson, B.C., where he has done several commissions for the city and various development projects.
