Jim was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan in 1940. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Saskatchewan and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Guelph, Ontario. He practiced veterinary medicine for 20 years in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Shortly after attending Old Master exhibitions in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas he sold his practice and became an artist. Jim studied with Joshua Fallik at the Scottsdale School of Art and became his apprentice. He has taken Master Classes as well from David Leffel.

Painting in the traditional, old master method, Jim composes and sets up his still lives in a darkened studio. His paintings are realist yet reflect his inner vision. He has won prizes in various juried competitions, among them Scottsdale School of Art's "Best and Brightest" as well as the Scottsdale Village Square juried exhibition. His paintings hang in many private and public collections in Canada, the United States and the Middle East. He also has commissions hanging in the Branffshire Dining room of the Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta. Jim now resides in Winnipeg Manitoba.
