Phyllis was born in Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan in 1940 and grew up in small towns in Western Canada. Her interest in art flourished in a home where her mother and siblings also painted. In 1988 she left a career in broadcasting to paint full time. Her love of sunshine and shadow is evident in the detailed and dramatic works she paints in watercolour or in acrylic on tanned moosehide.
Phyllis has won SFCA "Signature Status" with the Federation of Canadian Artists and numerous awards at their exhibitions; Signature membership in the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colours and the Alberta Society of Artists and a Juried Membership in Watercolor West, California, U.S.A. The Alberta Foundation for the Arts awarded her a Visual Arts Travel Grant in 1992. Her paintings were selected for "Project Calendar; the poster painting for "Colours from the light: 1998, Calgary, Alberta; "Calgary Real Estate Board Calendar" 2000; "Colours from the Light" Calendar 2000, Calgary, Alberta; and featured in "International Artist", April/May Issue 1999, Australia. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries, group shows, solo shows, three-generation family shows, International, National, Regional and Provincial Shows and the Western Art Show, Auction and Sales Salon at the Calgary Stampede. Over 35 newspaper and magazine articles, three Cable TV productions have featured her work as well as a children's book titled "My Trip to the Rodeo". Her paintings are in a variety of corporate collections including The Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Cross Cancer Clinic in Edmonton, Alberta as well as the Diploma Collection, Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, Art Gallery of Peel in Brampton, Ontario. Phyllis has also been collected in private collections in Canada, the United States, Sweden, Great Britain, Japan and more. |
