Sculpture

Mark Totan is an Inuk artist originally from the small, Eastern Arctic community of Igloolik. Mark is a self taught artist who has been carving in a variety of stone and antler mediums since 1990. Each carving is original and depicts some feature of the lifestyle or history of his people.

Mark begins the carving process by roughing out a block of stone with a hammer, chisel and hand axe; he then uses files, rasps and sandpaper for finishing. The final touch consists of heating and rubbing the carving with wax or oil to accent the natural grain of the stone.

Mark's carvings are displayed and sold in various galleries throughout Canada and the American mid-west. In addition, his works form a part of numerous private and corporate collections throughout the world.
