Stephen Hynes was born in 1944 near the city of Liverpool, England. His first painting was completed in 1958. In 1959 he attended the Laird School of Art in Birkenhead, England, directing his studies to the paintings of the Dutch masters. In 1965 he immigrated to Canada and worked in Prince Rupert where he painted portraits of the local people and scenery for the native children's pantomime.

In 1967 he moved to Toronto and in the European tradition of art education, again directed his studies to the paintings of the Dutch masters, creating numerous oil copies. In 1973 he returned to Europe and painted in Norway, Holland and England, Finally returning to Calgary, Canada in 1980. He now resides and teaches oil painting in Nanaimo, BC.

Stephen's style of painting has evolved over 30 years from realism in oils, to wildlife in watercolours to surrealism in egg tempera. Finally, he arrived at his own style of impressionism using the pointillist technique of the French artists Camille Pissaro, Paul Signac and Georges Seurat, using oil on canvas.

Stephen was a member of the Otley Art Society in England. His paintings can be found in public and private collections in England, Norway, Holland, Australia, Canada and the United States.
