When Gabriel Gély left France in 1952, he was pursuing a boyhood dream to see the Canadian Arctic.

As a self-taught artist with a special interest in Ancient Art, he was fascinated by the Inuit and their nomadic folklore.

Since his introduction to the Arctic and its people in 1953, Gabriel has lived in most Inuit settlements across the High Arctic, gaining a rare knowledge of the People, their language, customs and land.

His most treasured experiences remain his adventures with the Hahiarmiut, a unique group of inland Inuit of the Kewatin District.

These people, due to starvation, were evacuated to coastal communities in 1956. Three decades later, Gabriel arranged for a return visit of the elders to their ancestral grounds of Ennadai Lake.

This nostalgic trip was featured by the CBC Fifth Estate program (1985) and documented by a number of Gabriel's paintings - a collection of which is at the Prince of Whales Museum in Yellowknife.
