Norman was born in England in 1933. In 1946 he won a scholarship to Canterbury College of Art and after passing the International Diploma Design Examination in 1949, specializing in oil painting, he qualified for entrance to the Royal College of Art in London. His four-year program at the Royal College focused on painting, illustration and graphic design. With his degree thesis "Colour and Human Perception", Norman graduated in 1954 an Associate, Royal College of Art.

Norman spent four years in the Royal Air Force as an air electronics technician. On leaving the RAF, he resumed his painting. Beginning in 1962, Norman held one-man exhibitions in London and various other cities in England.

Norman Brown and his Family emigrated to Canada in 1968 and settled in Calgary where he pursued an active career in professional painting. Mr. Brown was well known and respected among collectors of Fine Art in Western Canada. Extensive formal training and years of professional experience have won for Norman, the reputation of a consummate and meticulous craftsman in whatever medium he used.

Norman's techniques are tried and true, painting finely detailed works either on location or in the studio, utilizing the glazing methods of the masters in oils, or the fluid spontaneous and somewhat transient effects of watercolour to capture the effects of light in nature.

A Long time teacher and instructor, Norman taught many of Alberta's emerging, professional artists in an atmosphere modeled on the European studio tradition. This teacher, lecturer and painter has works in major collections in Europe, North America and Asia.
